Referrals and Transport

Babies born at facilities other than UAB often need the specialized care that only a level IIIc RNICU can offer. Annually, about 20 percent of the babies in UAB's RNICU are transferred here from other medical facilities.

How to Refer

Physicians should call the UAB MIST line at 1-800-UAB-MIST (1-800-822-6478). MIST provides any physician in the nation toll-free access to UAB Health System faculty and staff, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

UAB Critical Care Transport

UAB Critical Care Transport provides ground or air transport for patients. Jet aircraft intensive care units provide top-notch support during long-distance patient transports. For local transports, Critical Care Transport has three mobile intensive care units that maintain sophisticated, uninterrupted ICU care.

For neonatal patients requiring transport, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and Respiratory Therapist are used to care for the critical neonatal patients.

Critical Care Transport is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Complete arrangements for bedside to bedside transport, including ground transportation for air trips, are made by the Critical Care Transport Coordinator.  All Coordinators are Manager-level Registered Nurses or Registered Respiratory Therapists.

How to Arrange a Transport by UAB Critical Care Transport

Transports are arranged by calling 1-800-822-6478 and asking for the Transport Coordinator.
