Menopause and Osteoporosis

Menopause
All women, at one point or another, will experience menopause, or the cessation of menstrual bleeding. Often, osteoporosis comes with it. But UAB’s Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility works closely with the UAB Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Clinic to provide comprehensive care for menopause and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis
The UAB Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Clinic is one of the region’s leading osteoporosis referral centers, offering advanced multidisciplinary care for the treatment and prevention of metabolic bone disease. In one convenient visit, patients visiting the clinic meet with a patient educator, a physical therapist, a densitometrist, and a physician specializing in osteoporosis. More than 25 million Americans have the condition, which causes thinning of the bones and increases the possibility of a fracture (broken bone).

In addition, patients undergo screenings to determine the presence or extent of osteoporosis. The Osteoporosis Clinic serves as a focal point for clinical and basic bone-related research. We also educate both health care professionals and the public about osteoporosis.

Tone Your Bones
Preventing and treating osteoporosis takes a team of specialists, including registered dietitians, physical therapists, pharmacists and physicians. UAB’s Tone Your Bones program takes a multidisciplinary approach to your bone health.
