Fertility Drugs

Many effective medications are now available to treat infertility. Theses drugs range from oral Clomid and Letrozole to Gonal-F, Follistim, and other FSH Products. The links below discuss these products in detail:

  • Antibiotics
    Serious infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, can damage the reproductive organs.
     
  • Clomid
    Clomid was one of the first ovulation induction drugs and is used extensively by obstetrician/gynecologists. When it works it is usually duing the first three months of treatment.
     
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
    FSH is naturally produced by the pituitary gland under the influence of the hypothalamus. Gonal-F, Follistim,Bravelle, and Menopur are used for ovulation induction.
     
  • GnRH Antagonists, Agonists
    Lupron,Antagon, and Cetrotide are administered by subcutaneous injection. These products prevent premature ovulation when patients are undergoing ovulation induction with FSH.
     
  • Metformin, Glucophage
    Metformin is an insulin sensitizing drug used in the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
     
  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
    Pregnyl and Ovidrel are administered to cause ovulation in patients undergoing ovulation induction.
     
  • Parlodel, Progesterone
    Parlodel (bromocriptine) is used to treat patients with hyperprolactenemia (elevated prolactin levels.
    Progesterone helps to prepare the endometrium to accept a developing embryo.
