Diabetes and Heart Disease

Women can face a host of complications when it comes to diabetes and heart disease. But the physicians at UAB are specially trained to provide care tailored to each individual woman and the treatment she requires.

Diabetes
Women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have the advantage of UAB’s unique Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Diabetes Clinic (MCDC) , which simplifies diabetes care for all patients while providing care specific to women. The MCDC provides the benefit of top diabetes research and translational medicine matched by only a few institutions in the country. The clinical arm of UAB's Comprehensive Diabetes Center, the MCDC offers the expertise and compassion of UAB's top specialists in a single, comprehensive visit. Patients are able to see several specialists in one location in one day.

Because women can have unique complications from diabetes, including changes in blood glucose levels coinciding with their menstrual cycle, migraines, seizures and bouts of rheumatoid arthritis, physicians in UAB’s MCDC take special precautions when treating women with diabetes. This level of care sets UAB apart from other medical facilities.

Heart Disease
At one time it was thought that being a woman would protect you against heart disease. However, now we know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S. UAB’s nationally ranked heart program provides the full spectrum of cardiovascular services for women and performs the most advanced cardiovascular surgery procedures available.
