Radiation

UAB’s department of radiation oncology provides state-of-the-art technology, coupled with some of the nation’s top physicians. We offer patients the latest radiosurgery treatments, which have been proven successful against a number of cancers while producing fewer side effects. These latest radiation therapies – including the new Tomotherapy system – provide precise, three-dimensional images to identify and directly attack tumors while avoiding normal surrounding tissue. UAB was one of the first 10 institutions in the world with this system.

In addition, UAB was the first U.S. medical center to offer RapidArc radiation therapy, which shortens a radiation session from 20 minutes to 90 seconds. This new type of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRP) delivers multiple beams for radiation to a tumor and minimizes damage to the nearby healthy tissue.

The radiation oncology specialists at UAB also combine existing advanced treatment techniques with other new cancer therapeutic approaches to seek the best outcomes possible for each patient. The Radiation Oncology department at UAB treats the following diseases:

UAB is one of the few institutions in the country with a radiation oncology research component and conducts clinical trials to test and improve treatments for the future.
