Symptoms and Signs
Prostate cancer often offers no symptoms or warnings, so most men discover they have the disease during a routine screening. This is why screening exams are crucial for men over 40 years old. However, some men may experience some or all of the following symptoms:
  • frequent urination
  • inability to urinate
  • trouble starting or holding back urine flow
  • back, hip or upper thigh pain
  • painful ejaculation or trouble having an erection

Diagnosis and Treatment
Most men discover they have prostate cancer during a routine screening exam, which is why these exams are so important. If abnormal cells are discovered during this exam, a biopsy will be done, and if the cells are found to be cancer, treatment will begin.

Because the UAB prostate cancer clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic, and because prostate cancer can be treated a number of ways, a personalized treatment plan will be created for you at your first appointment. This treatment may include:
  • External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT), or the use of high-powered X-rays to kill the cancer cells
  • Radioactive Seen Implants deliver a smaller amount of radiation over a longer period of time through rice-sized “seeds” implanted by cancer cells.
  • Hormone Therapy, or causing the body to cease testosterone production, which can stimulate cancer cell growth
  • Radical Prostatectomy, or removal of the prostate gland surgically
  • Robotically-assisted surgery, or removal of the prostate through minimally invasive, robotically-assisted surgery
  • Chemotherapy, or destroying growing cancer cells with chemicals
  • Cryotherapy, or destroying cancer cells by freezing the tissue

Our Clinical Trials
UAB’s Prostate Cancer clinic is constantly working to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor to see if you are a candidate for one of UAB’s prostate cancer clinical trials.
