Innovations
Through research by top physicians, UAB Orthopaedics is home to numerous innovations, including:

  • UAB developed the fixed angle volar plate, which allows improved repair of complex fractures.
  • UAB is the national leader in total ankle arthroplasty and performs more of these procedures
  • than any other center in the world.
  • UAB spine physicians are the only subspecialists in Birmingham to perform minimally invasive spine surgery through a lateral approach. This approach results in a smaller incision on the side of the body, rather than a large incision on the front of the body. In fact, UAB physicians have trained other physicians in this lateral approach.
  • UAB physicians developed the next generation of weight-bearing surfaces, resulting in smoother, longer lasting joints.
  • The first MRI-guided Custom Fit Total Knee Replacement in the Southeast was performed by a UAB musculoskeletal oncologist at UAB Highlands in November 2007. Since then, more than 200 successful Custom Fit Total Knee Replacement surgeries have been performed at UAB Highlands, and the number continues to grow.
